Everything you send becomes a draft. Nothing appears on the site until the web editor reads it and publishes it, so nothing here can go out by accident.

Writing

• Paste your piece from Word, Google Docs, a PDF — anywhere. Formatting comes with it.
• Put the headline on the first line. It stays in your article until you press Fill remaining fields, which moves it into the Headline box so it is not published twice. Nothing is removed from your writing until you press that.
• Auto-format finds the subheads and paragraphs in a plain paste. It never changes your words — if it ever did, the submission is refused rather than sent.
• Undo and redo cover everything, including the automatic passes.

Podcasts and videos

• Paste the Spotify episode link and the rest fills itself in: the headline, the description, the section, and a picture taken from the video recording.
• An episode that only went out on YouTube can use the YouTube link instead.
• A video submission fills itself in the same way from its own link.
• Anything you have already typed is never overwritten.

Pictures

• Every piece needs a featured image — the one on the front page. For a podcast, a still from the video recording is the easiest thing to use.
• Alt text and a credit are required on every photo. Alt text is what a screen reader has instead of the picture; the credit is the line the paper owes whoever took it.
• Photos can be cropped, moved, swapped for a better version, or promoted to the front page, all from the little icons on the photo.

Filing it

• Directory — build the path one step at a time. It decides where the piece appears on the site.
• Tags They are how a piece is found once it is no longer the newest thing on the site.
• The panel on the right lists anything still missing, and the red dots point at it.

After you send it

• You get a permanent link to your piece, with a button to copy it. That is the address it will live at, and it keeps working even if the web editor rewrites the headline or moves the piece into another section.
• It shows a page not found until the piece is published. That is expected — the link starts working the moment the web editor publishes it, and not before.
• Copy it before you leave the page. It is shown once and saved nowhere: reloading, pressing Start over, or beginning another submission loses it.

If something goes wrong

• The team code comes from the web editor. It changes each semester.
• Start over empties the form. Refreshing the page does the same.
• If a submission is refused and the reason does not make sense, it is a bug in this tool rather than something you did — tell the web editor.
